In Week One this term all of Waikowhai Primary School partook in a neighbourhood clean up. A Litter Blitz!! It was exciting and depressing. Everyone was excited to be outside on a beautiful day doing something for the community and helping to keep our world a beautiful place. It was depressing because we picked up 200kg of rubbish in 1 and a half hours. That was with around 230 people all working together. So much rubbish is just thrown out onto the streets.
After our collecting we had a sausage sizzle together. The rubbish was collated by a group of students so we could see what was the most common things found. Cigarette butts, takeaway packaging and circulars were the worst.
Miss Abedin, the Hauraki student teacher also helped collect rubbish with a group of students.

Watercress heads.
For some of our weekly gardening sessions, we have been making watercress heads. We had lots of yoghurt pots, which we had been collecting for a few weeks. We also needed pantyhose, soil and of course seeds!
We started by decorating our yoghurt pots to look like certain characters. We did this using card, bits of material and felts. We then sprinkled the bottom of our pantyhose with the seeds, followed by a good amount of soil. Once shaped into a ball we placed them into our yoghurt pots and waited for them to sprout!

Kowhai Seed Collecting
During the holidays Miss Daly went for a walk down to Waikowhai Bay. On the track halfway down she noticed lots of yellow seeds on the ground. They looked like kowhai seeds. When she looked up past the canopy of low trees she saw a massive Kowhai tree.
We decided to go down to the track and collect the seeds to see if we can grow Kowhai trees to sell to the community. We managed to collect quite a lot. It was fun looking for them.
We have found out that you need to carefully sand each seed to allow water to penetrate the tough exterior in order to germinate. Hopefully we will have some seedlings in 6 months ready to sell!
